Universal Orlando fans received thrilling news this week with the unveiling of advanced animatronics set to debut when Epic Universe opens next year. This new park will be the third addition to the Universal Orlando Resort, featuring five immersive themed areas.

Currently, the Universal Orlando Resort includes two parks—Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure—as well as a water park, Volcano Bay. Epic Universe will introduce eagerly awaited areas such as Super Nintendo World, the Dark Universe featuring Classic Monsters, the How to Train Your Dragon-inspired Isle of Berk, an expansion of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and a brand-new original area.

It has been officially confirmed that Universal Monsters will play a significant role in Epic Universe, with an entire section, Dark Universe, dedicated to them. A video shared on Twitter this week provided a first look at some of the animatronics featured in the attraction Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment.

The animatronics showcased in the video are remarkably lifelike, boasting fluid movements and realistic features designed to both thrill and frighten. According to the video's commentary, these animatronics are faster and more advanced than any previously created by Universal, with 14 characters—including Frankenstein, Dracula, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and the Wolfman—set to appear throughout the attraction. The Universal Classic Monsters have enjoyed a resurgence at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort in recent years, with Halloween Horror Nights events featuring them annually since 2018. Fans will undoubtedly be excited to see these iconic characters brought to life in a terrifyingly realistic way year-round.

Dark Universe will host two immersive attractions, The Curse of the Werewolf and Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, along with themed restaurants and bars, and opportunities for meet-and-greets with various monsters, including the Creature from the Black Lagoon and the Phantom of the Opera. If the animatronics introduced for Monsters Unchained are indicative of the technology used throughout Dark Universe and the rest of Epic Universe, it could redefine theme park experiences. While rides at Walt Disney World, like Na'vi River Adventure and Tiana's Bayou Adventure, feature advanced animatronics, they have faced numerous technical issues since their openings. The durability and performance of the Monsters animatronics will be closely watched, as successful implementation could herald exciting developments for both Disney and Universal parks in the future.
